general rad case 4

h/o abdominal pain

Findings:

  • Tubular hypodense structure within the jejunum.
  • Oral contrast also seen within the tubular structure giving a parallel band appearance.

Diagnosis:

Small bowel ascariasis

Discussion:

  • Ascariasis is a common parasitic infection in tropical and subtropical regions.
  • A large amount of ascaris worms within the lumen can cause bowel obstruction.
  • It is also the most common cause of pulmonary Loeffler's syndrome.
  • If no obstruction / perforation, treatment is by single dose of 400mg albendazole.
